Getting the batteries in shape or replacing them will be easiest and safest by far. Regardless of whether or not the tranny would be damaged, steering one of those things without the engine running is a pain. Completely possible, but a pain nonetheless. When jumping, connect the negative cable to a ground source on the 4250 and the positive cable to the LH battery positive terminal or more ideally, directly to the starter post if you can. On the off chance the tractor has been converted to 12-volt batteries in parallel instead of the factory 6-volts in series, it would be easier and faster to use two sets of jumpers and two vehicles, one connected to each battery as when jumping a single 12-volt. Use good heavy jumper cables as that thing will pull a lot of amps if the batteries are way down. If the tractor was operated in recent months, it should start without much trouble. Priming the hand-primer a few pumps is still a good idea, as some of the older tractors tend to lose some prime after sitting for extended periods of time.
