If he gets it in a high enough gear so that he can actually crank the engine over while pulling it, there will be no harm to the transmission. Damage to the transmission from towing occurs because with the transmission in neutral the transmission top shaft, which drives the transmission oil pump is not turning, and it is this shaft that drives the transmission oil pump. To repeat, pull starting will not hurt the tranny, but towing it without the engine turning, at any shift position other than "TOW" will deprive the upper shaft of oil. (When it's in "TOW", the gears on the upper shaft are not being turned by the gears on the lower [Output Pinion] shaft, so there's no need for lube to the top shaft.)
