Rod, I disagree with your method of checking the main pump for output pressure. The check that you describe should be done with the oil hot, not cold. A marginal pump will likely pass your test with cold oil, but fail miserably with hot oil. The way I always did this quick test is to just hold back the handle and listen to how hard the engine is working. After you've done it enough times, you can get a pretty good sense of what will work and what won't, but again, the oil needs to be hot (150 plus degrees).
