OK; I'm going to try this from memory, so if I make a mistake, somebody please correct me.. I found the most accurate way is to remove the gas tank and the valve cover. Then, remove #1 sparkplug (closest to radiator), have key OFF, and put thumb over spark plug hole. Have some one slowly bump starter until pressure begins to push thumb away. Now you're close. Line up timing marks located down by flywheel. You should now be at TDC. (Top Dead Center) Both rocker arms on #1 should be loose indicating the valves are both closed. Remove distributor cap and see if rotor is pointing to # 1 wire going to spark plug. If not, remove distributor hold down bolt, lift distributor out just enough in order to turn rotor to line up. Be aware that as you lower distributor back down the rotor will turn slightly due to the dist. gear falling into sync with camshaft. Just be sure that when the dist. is lowered all the way, the rotor points to #1. Replace dist. hold down bolt and just tighten snugly. Replace the accessories, hook up timing light, and fire that sucker up. Adjust timing per manual, tighen hold down bolt, and go mowing. Good luck, Chuck
