Well, Tim is on the right track...anywhere there is a hollow spot inside of a casting...there has to be a baked sand core inside...so there will not be molten metal there. The top and bottom of a mold are what holds the sand...they are called the cope and drag...if I remember right. there are other things involved including chaplets which keep the sand from collapsing in the mold. The pattern maker's job is a world of reverse...letters and numbers have to be made in reverse...so they'll come out forward on the casting. The molder has to ram up the sand using the pattern in the cope and drag and put in the baked sand cores and such...a very precision job with experience the best teacher. These guys that do this for a living are artists. Small metal parts can be die cast as Tim mentioned, usually aluminum or pot metal. Some of the newer technology high tech companys are doing other metals too. L8R....Fred OH
