The real reason "freeze plugs" are mounted in certain engine blocks is because they have to plug the holes left by casting dies. You can't cast the engine block on certain designs without two or three piece dies that must be removed after casting. Some freeze plugs cover holes needed to facilitate the machining of certain surfaces inside the block, like bearing journals and oil galleys. Not all engines need these holes, therefore my next question. Why in the world would you want to add something like a hole in your engine? You don't think these things have the potential for enough leaks already? NCtim
