Just throwing on a 12 volt alternator masks/band aid's the real problem. On a 6 volt system, you MUST have good battery cables and clean, bright, and tight connections. If the cables are old, or if someone has swapped them out for smaller cables suitable for 12 volts, you are going to have starting issues. You need at least 1/0 cables. Then, check the grounds, check the grounds, check the grounds. Then look at the starter. If it hasn't been off the tractor in 40 years, it probably needs to be cleaned and serviced--maybe new brushes installed and/or other stuff. Since it isn't charging I would take the generator to be serviced when you take the starter. It probably hasn't been touched in a long time either. When you re-install the generator, check the grounds check the grounds check the grounds. All connections need to be clean, bright, and tight. Chances are the regulator will need to be replaced, get a good one (Echlin) not a cheapo from Tractor Supply. Yes they can be fussy but I have had minimal problems with a good quality regulator.
Once you do all this, it will start just as fast as a 12 volt system, and it will charge. If you do insist on changing to 12 volts, don't make a mess of it like so many often do by cutting sheet metal, duct-taping electrical systems, and chopping up generator brackets.
And before anyone asks, I have three six volt tractors. One is a "trailer queen" but the other two work for a living. They start and charge reliably.
