A couple of years ago I converted my 300 U to 12 volt, negative ground. It worked fine for about a year and then started doing what you discribed. One day I took it off to work on the steering and when I put it back its been working fine every since. Part of taking if off included removing the ground wire from the chassie. I'm thinking the ground could have been the problem but don't know for sure. It costs nothing to remove the ground, clean it up and put it back.
