300 Generator

I've got a Farmall 300 that has been converted to a 12 volt, posative ground with the original generator. Its worked great until a couple of months ago. Every time you start the tractor, you need to re-polarize the generator. Once you re-polarize it, the generator charges properly, until you shut off the tractor and start it later and you need to polarize the genrerator. My question is, what do I need to do to fix the problem. Is my regulator bad, or is it in the generator. Any help is appreciated.
