Farmal 450 Diesel starting problems

I bought a 450 diesel about 2 years ago from my Grandfather's estate. The engine must first be started on gasoline, and then flip a lever over so that it runs on diesel. It has been very hard over the years to start it, but once it is started, it runs on diesel very well. My Dad has told me that my Grandfather took a carborator off of another 450 diesel that runs well, but it never did start any better. Does anyone know what the problem might be? I wouldn't think its a compression problem, or else it wouldn't run on diesel.
