I wish you luck in your search for parts. The 404 is one of the more rare tractors so finding one in a salvage yard with the parts you need is going to be a tough row to hoe.
One thing that might help is that AFAIK, the 240 is basically the same tractor.
As for the hydraulic fluid volume, there should be a level check plug that indicates when it is full. You keep putting in fluid until it starts to run out the level check plug. Whatever it takes to do that is what it takes.
Was the old oil milky? it may have had a lot of water mixed in.
