IH gas/diesel engines

I'm considering buying an M or 400 with the IH diesel that started on gas, then switched to diesel. Were these considered good engines? Any significant problems to look for? I know about their ability to have cracked heads. What are the sypmtoms to look for if a head is cracked. Does it skip or smoke. Is there any fix for a cracked head other than to replace it. I have considerable experience with IH gas engines but not much with diesels - any advise would be appreciated.
