the square retainer should spin as you turn the head (tang sticks in the hole) to reinstall the lock just stick the tang in the hole and rotate one revolution, trim off the excess retainer
sometimes the groove will wear out and the slot and groove in the head will no longer align, you may need to tap the head into the cylinder some to align the groove
half of the groove is in the bore and the other half is in the head, kind of a weak joint, but that is what we have to work with
