Have the same problem with our Oliver 1600, 1650 and 1850.
Solution was attach a short tether (nylon shoe lace) to the key with a small magnet on the other end. When using the tractor simply stick the magnet to the dash panel or side of the hood. Now if the key falls out it won't get lost.
However if I don't have a key handy, I do same as you and use my pocket knife to operate the ignition.
