Seems to me that you need to figure out what you plan to do with the land before you start working on it.
If you don't know what you are going to plant. I think the suggestion of sheep and a couple goats is your best bet until you figure out what you want to do. I would probably leave off the goats, my bias. However, goats would be good to keep the new trees browsed down.
