T-bone I work for a small company that owns 3 Dodge 1 ton duallys with the Cummins and 5 speeds 1 95' 2 2000 models. The 95 has 4:10 rearends the others have 3:55 and we have tried the 6 speeds. Our conclusion is we prefer the 5 speed and 3:55 gears we pull 18,000 lbs backhoes on gooseneck trailors and you can easily run 65-70 mph. The 6 speed seems to be just 1 more gear to have to shift and does not seem much benifit to us.
