Any moisture in the engine will turn to steam when the engine is running which will rise to the highest points in the engine mixing with the engine oil causing what looks like snot to form.The old and quick and probably not the safest way to check and see if this problem is caused by coolant is to taste it (just a little on the end of your finger,DO NOT EAT IT IT IS POISIN!)if it is sweet then it has anti-freeze in it,if it isn't sweet then it is moisture.An oil sample would be more the year 2000 standards!Moisture can be cuased by the block sweating with air temperature changes,humidity,and just running the engine for a short period of time and shutting it down with out reaching operating temp!You may need shutters(canvas with a piece of heavey wire though the top and bottom that you clip into the grill that way it can be rolled up when the temp comes up or a new thermostat!
