Running Rich

I have a '48 Super A which apparently has a replacement engine installed (the small block below #1 spark plug just has "FAA"). Is there is a casting # anywhere on the block that would give me a clue as to the year? Also it runs rich. I have lowered the float level 1/16" below std. but it still runs rich. I rarely need to choke it to start. Are there other sizes of main jets available?
