What kinda spark are you getting at the plugs, red, orange, or a good fat blue one. Don't sound like a good ole blue one, or it would be running like it should. Check the inside of the cap for cracks, what condition is the rotor in, did you clean and reset the points to the correct gap. How much juice are you getting from the coil? could be bad wires back to the switch.
