super m belly pump control rod

On my super m the hydrolics won't hold unless I hold the rod up off the stop about 1 1/2". I tried to adjust by moving the lever on the valve shaft but that didn't work. I've ended up bending a bow in the control rod to,in effect, make it shorter. What is my solution? (1) shorten the rod by cutting it off and re-bending the end at the control lever? (2) remove the stop pin and re-weld it 1 1/2" lower down on the rod? Or is there a internal adjustment to the valve that I can make? Any suggestions would be a big help. My service manual doesn't mention anything about any adjustments that can be made.
