If it were wired correctly, as Jim and Tractorman pointed out, the VR's L terminal feeds hot battery voltage to loads (lights, ignition etc) INSTEAD OF them being fed off the ammeter terminal that wires down to BAT on the VR. The loads still get hot voltage to work IFFFFFFFFF fed from the ammeter even if the VR's L wasnt used and hooked up at all as thats what happens if you dont have the VR L terminal. HOWEVER I would do as they indicate and dont hook the L to the ammeter, but instead run a wire from L up to the light switch (for BAT input voltage) and remove any other wire from the ammeter that wires to the light switch.
