Hey John T - The original, stock 6 volt starter and inertia (Bendix) drive are still on my Super M. It was my first alternator conversion - therefore it has survived on 12 volts for 30+ years now.
The only part I've had to replace was the commutator end plate. The original die cast (pot metal) plate cracked into several pieces - I presume from repeated impact reactions by the armature as the bendix spins out. The replacement commutator plate is stamped steel and is holding up fine.

As you suggest I use a smallish, 525 CCA battery in an attempt to limit starter inrush current. The tractor still has stock #0 AWG battery cables however.
