Ive converted from 6 to 12 and used the old 6 volt starter at 12 volts and never had any problems HOWEVER that can be tough on starter drives and starers and perhaps flywheel ring gear teeth due to such strong initial kick in torque !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My self and Ol Bob M have discussed this and are of the opinions when doing this NOT to use a super heavy high capacity battery (like a 1000 CCA, maybe a wimpy 500 CCA instead) orrrrrrrrrrr maybe use lighter gauge (like 4 or 2 instead of 1 or 0) battery cables EITHER OF WHICH can reduce the problem to some extent.
I think Jim or Bob have some recommendations far as the type of starter drive to use??????
