You need to install an idiot light or a diode or a switch between the battery and the terminal on the side of the alternator. You can get a plug-on terminal for a buck or so from a discount auto supply. On the left of this page locate Research&Info. Under the heading see Article Archives. Open this and go to the article by BobM titled Step by Step 12 Volt Conversion. From his good drawing you will see what you are missing.
