Paul, can I assume that both of your tractors mentioned have 12 volt systems with the GM alternators? How many wires are connected to the alternators, one or three? The function of the idiot light is to provide excitation voltage to the alternator. In order for an alternator to charge it must have power from an external source. The idiot light is the source and the element (filament) in the bulb also acts as a resistor and prevents voltage feedback when the switch is turned off and lets tractor shutdown on a coil type ignition. A diode can be used in place of the idiot lamp or you can mount a momentary switch but that requires the tractor operator to push the switch to start the charge condition. Once the switch is punched the system will charge and regulate until the tractor is shutdown. Bob's schematic is similar to what was on most GM vehicles in the 60's and is simple, cheap and dependable.
