I just cleaned the air cleaner cartridge on my John Deere B. I unbolted the cartridge from the air stack and soaked it for several days in a bucket of kerosene. The cartridge is full of crinkled, fine mesh hardware cloth, so it didnt look like I could get much out of blowing it out or pressure washing. I would swirl it every time I walked past, and since it was taller than the bucket I would swap ends every day or so. I dont know what is left in the middle, but the ends look clean and the kerosene is pretty dark. I used a cheap bottle brush to clean the gunk out of the central passage. I soaked the cast iron elbow that goes to the carburetor in a bucket of hot lye water (poor mans hot tank), and the crud inside it survived six hours! Hot, soapy water and the bottle brush did the trick, though. By the way, not a scrap of paint survived the lye, which was the real purpose of the soak. Now all I have to do is get it painted, because the rust comes up almost the instant you pull it out of the water. Pat
