When I set mine, I took out the spark plugs so it would be easier to turn and not roll backwards then rolled the engine slowly over till I got it to TDC, that way all the slop in the gears would be taken out before setting the mag in the right holes. It fired right up everytime with no kickback. There was also some different plates with holes for converting old typ mags to new ones, but don"t remember much about those, just know they had them and may make it tough to line up if mag has one plate and timing side has the other.
