10-20 Magneto Update - Advice Needed

A while ago I posted that I had just had my FM-J magneto rebuilt and was remounting it to my McCormick-Deering 10-20. Since the engine was left at TDC on #1 I rotated the magneto backwards until it was passed the #1 plug wire and then rotated it forward until I felt resistance. It was close to the #1 terminal, but before it. I bolted everything up and now when I try to start it I get 3-5 nice "hits" and it sounds like it is going to take off and then it dies. Have I set the timing too late? What else should I check.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Paul, Fireing order 1,3,4,2, Bring it back around Just before #1 pull plug wire and see if you get spark when #1 is TDC. If spark it before or after adjust with screws on mag conector.
If it is way out you mag is set wrong. oldiron29

You may need to bring No1 piston to TDC on the compression stroke. Once you have No1 piston at TDC look to see where your rotor is pointing.
It should be at the No1 plug tower. If it's off
you need to pull the mag and rotate the rotor so it's pointing to the No1 plug tower then reinstall the mag. Hal

When I set mine, I took out the spark plugs so it would be easier to turn and not roll backwards then rolled the engine slowly over till I got it to TDC, that way all the slop in the gears would be taken out before setting the mag in the right holes. It fired right up everytime with no kickback. There was also some different plates with holes for converting old typ mags to new ones, but don"t remember much about those, just know they had them and may make it tough to line up if mag has one plate and timing side has the other.

Thanks for everyone's help. I checked and it turns out that I had TDC right but the mag was firing WAY late. I had set the magento at the point I felt resistance thinking it would fire right after that. Little did I know it still had a ways to go. Live and learn.

Will be resetting everything today and will get you posted. Thanks again.
