I know that sometimes a bearing can go out and the gear will push one of the balls through the housing.
Did IH ever make such a patch to cover such a hole? This patch is perfectly formed and looks too perfect to be home made.
If the owner took it to a metal fabrication shop, they could have rolled a patch to match the curve of the housing pretty easily.
On the other hand, never underestimate the ingenuity and craftsmanship of some of the older generation.
