Super H differential

I recently purchased a 53 super H and I later saw that it had a small patch bolted to the right bottom of the differential housing. The patch is 6-8 inches long and maybe 4 inches wide.
I know that sometimes a bearing can go out and the gear will push one of the balls through the housing.
Did IH ever make such a patch to cover such a hole? This patch is perfectly formed and looks too perfect to be home made.

I never heard of IH making a patch but I made a few. They were not all that impressive though. It wasn't my idea, just do what you are told to do. Later on when one knocked a hole I stripped them down and had them welded.

Good repair is incredible. To my knowledge, there were no repair patches for housing damage. The dealership would have sold a new housing. Jim

Sounds very similar to what is under my 1940 M. Somebody went to a lot of work to drill and tap all those holes.

If the owner took it to a metal fabrication shop, they could have rolled a patch to match the curve of the housing pretty easily.

On the other hand, never underestimate the ingenuity and craftsmanship of some of the older generation.
