You are talking about the style seal that is driven onto the spindle, right. They used to mark them dirt side, lately they don't seem to do that. I put them on flat out, (facing you as you drive them on). I don't think it would make a hill of beans difference but it is easier to install them that way. Those three seal ribs will all bend to the dirt side as you install the hub. Make sure the seal fits nicely in the hub which may or may not have a replaceable sleeve for the seal to ride on. Felts are a thing of the past with this style seal.
