This whole coil discussion has been very interesting. I will be watching for the results.
I always thought the coils from my points cars were 6 volt and hence the resistor wire that was bypassed during starting; full 12v for extra bang for starting and 6 for steady running to enhance point life.
I've used car coils on tractors for quite a while now with no resistor and no problems other than cleaning the points every couple years.
