copper fuel lines????

I've been having trouble with my gas sediment bowl and decided it was time to replace it. I also noticed the fuel line was rusting pretty badly and needed replacing as well. I went to my local TSC and bought a bowl assembly and started to fabricate a new line from some 5/16" copper tubing I had left over from my air conditioning system. I then recalled that all fuel lines are steel. I remember seeing steel fuel lines at the local NAPA store. Is it just economics or is gasoline bad on copper?
