If at all possible, I prefer the old style metal type head gaskets. I've used both, but the new style ones are much thinner and don't have a fire ring around the cylinder. I put a new style on my 15-30 and it was so much thinner, I had to put washers under the rocker arm pedestals in order to get the proper valve clearance. Without the fire ring I can't imagine the new ones would hold up as long under heavy use. I've never had any trouble with leakage with any of them. I always coat them with copper spray-a-gasket.
