If you find sludge in the oil pan, most defintitely pull the valve cover and give that area a cleaning. While you are at it, plan on pulling the pushrod inspection plate behind the oil filter and the distributor. This is the easiest time to do it while the filter is off. You might find those chambers packed with grime also. Once you get the head, the pushrod chamber and the oil pan cleaned out, you have gotten 90% of the grime out of the engine.
