Buy a cheap digital multimeter for your toolbox. That way you can take it and test the voltage of the battery right away and know if it is the problem.
The battery should read 6.2-6.5 Volts at rest. Under 6.0 Volts means that it is not being charged properly, or is going bad. 5.0 Volts means the battery is dead.
I suspect you have a bad connection somewhere:
1. Bad connection between ground cable and tractor frame.
2. Bad connection at battery posts.
3. Bad connection at starter switch.
4. Bad connection at starter.
5. Bad starter switch.
Bad connections happen suddenly: Yesterday it worked, today it won't.
