If the bushing is bad enough to allow the armature to touch the pole shoes it will stop charging. The metal to metal contact upsets the magnetic lines of force causing it to stop charging. As long as the armature is not damaged from the contact you will most likely be alright if you replace the bushing. Check to make sure there is no continuity between the commutator and the armature shaft/plates. Shorts in the armature windings can be tested with a growler.
