My Cub doesn't make much noise while it is coasting. I haven't driven it downhill, so I can't say if letting it run downhill in idle does anything. As for the engine noise, I have never been that far into one of these engines. My clutch, however was all fouled up, and I had some strange noises coming from there. What I think I'll do with the tranny is pop my reverse idler out and see if that quiets it down. Then I will buy those two gears. I suspect that the noise is traveling through the case, and that makes it harder to diagnose. And that may be what your bell housing noise is doing(?). Could it be the cluth pilot bearing?
