I had a similar problem, and what Chris says is right on. Crank by hand with an assistant and listen for wheezing by the plugs. They'll leak air, especially if you've had them in and out a few times. If you have no assistant, put a drop of motor oil at the base of each plug: don't pull them, just let the oil run around the base of each. This may be enough to seal any little leaks, or it will bubble and spit if you're losing compression. I did this and my A fired right up on the second crank (cranking by hand)--this after three days of monkeying around to see what it was. BTW, I think most of the starting fluid just dissolves in the oil bath at the bottom of the air filter if you spray in from above. You could take the bath off the bottom and try sprying up from below, or remove the whole filter and spray into the choke.
