Big D has a 460. There are differences there, one being the hyd pump is in the rear frame, not engine driven like the 400/450. Maybe the oil has to be thrown over a web in the case by rotating gears, therefore the front drain plug??? That web would also keep the front section from oil-starvation on steep hills, and low oil levels. JMHO.
