Otherwise, like you said , count back from any number you can identify like 10 or 20 or what ever. If you still have pan off, you can get withing a couple of degrees by observing the piston and rod from underneath. The correct time to make the mark was with the head off and by using a dial indicator on piston head. You make a mark on pulley when piston is like .001 from top coming up and .001 from top on the way down. Then make a tdc mark in the exact middle of those two marks.
