Yep.. If you used the 3 wire Delco you need a diode or a small "lamp" to prevent the backfeeding, as was previously stated.
I myself like the "light" as it kinda tells me if I'm charging or not (as not all things I have have a volt meter or ammeter).
My local NAPA gets me one that is "sealed" and slips in a 1/2" hole.. and I think they cost about $7.00.. Can be had in a variety of colors.. Blue, Green, Orange, and Red that I know of for sure. I usually keep one around (as I've found a few other good uses for em too), which reminds me, all I have left is a green one.
Oh.. and if you use the light, you connect one "post" to the ignition switch, and the other post to the alternator (I believe the #1 post?? on the Alt.. been a while since I done it last).. I screwed that up my first time.
Also as mentioned, Bob once posted for me the wiring diagram.. Very simple and easy to understand.. Makes it almost foolproof to swap stuff over from gen to alt.
