Converted 400 to 12v , now tractor won't shut off with key

I followed a good diagram for a 6v to 12v diagram.
Alt. still not charging. After finding aditional wires off ign.side of switch,I put them back on and now have 14 some volts at batt. Now the tractor won't shut off with key. In the diagram was a batt.warning light. I don't have one, and didn't think I needed it. ? thanks

You need a diode in the circuit...hot rodders found that out years ago. Current feeds back through the ignition circuit; a diode acts as a "one-way valve' and stops the backfeeding.

Ask about Bob's diagrams for the conversion for the diode part number and where to place it in the circuit.

Yep.. If you used the 3 wire Delco you need a diode or a small "lamp" to prevent the backfeeding, as was previously stated.

I myself like the "light" as it kinda tells me if I'm charging or not (as not all things I have have a volt meter or ammeter).

My local NAPA gets me one that is "sealed" and slips in a 1/2" hole.. and I think they cost about $7.00.. Can be had in a variety of colors.. Blue, Green, Orange, and Red that I know of for sure. I usually keep one around (as I've found a few other good uses for em too), which reminds me, all I have left is a green one.

Oh.. and if you use the light, you connect one "post" to the ignition switch, and the other post to the alternator (I believe the #1 post?? on the Alt.. been a while since I done it last).. I screwed that up my first time.

Also as mentioned, Bob once posted for me the wiring diagram.. Very simple and easy to understand.. Makes it almost foolproof to swap stuff over from gen to alt.

That wire can also be connected to the + side of the coil if you don't want to run it all the way back to the switch. That's how I did it on my MM's.

The diode I used was from Radio Shack, # 276-1661. A package of 4 was only a couple dollars.

Bob, I know why they refer you. That picture is great. I'm sure we will write again ...Thanks Freind ...Tim
