That's not a fuel problem. What's happening is that not all the fuel is burning, or in your case hardly any. You ought to check the points and make sure they're not burned or melted.

I'm don't think you need to be running high octane fuel. These old gals were originally designed for 83 or so octane. Oh, I hope you found oil when you checked for it. Should be be around 4 or 5 quarts.;)
