The gear on the end of the hydralic pump is timed to the gear that drives it, and through it, the distributor. If you take the timing cover(front engine cover) off, you will see punch marks on these gears that are lined up to keep everything in time. So when you take off the distributor make sure you note which spark plug or cylinder the rotor is pointing at inside the distributor cap, then reinstall it pointing at the very same one.If the shaft is not moved it will be right on. If it has been moved it can be 180 degrees out of time or right on when removed and reinstalled as above.
