There is a check valve (ball) in the belly pump and it should definetly hold the load. One other thing though is that the rod you pull to lift and lower may be bent wrong or the bracket attatching to steering post may be positioned wrong which is very easy to tell. Just pull rod rearward a little to see if you can find a neutral point where it holds the load. Common problem. If not then you need to take pump out and repair. You could try using the other outlet as there are two seperate check valve and one may be good. One side has front and rear, other side had front only and the fronts on both sides are on same check ball.
