Wellll, I was walking past the tractor and it pulled me in like a giant vacuum cleaner! I had NO choice! It told me to take off work today and see just what the problem was.
So, I tried, with no luck, several methods of turning the engine over after removing the starter motor. First, I tried prying a little more than gently, but not much, with my largest screwdriver in the starter motor opening, then with a 5 ft. wrecking bar. Zip. So, I removed the front cover, radiator and fan assembly and was able to get to the front pulley. As luck would have it, the same bar fits nicely in the crank pulley, and I was able with the help of a pipe wrench on the pry bar to turn the engine over backwards a half turn. This told me the pistons weren't moving all the way around, so I removed the cylinder head and sure enough, there was considerable rust and crud in the no. 2 and 3 pistons. I am not sure of the numbering, but it was the middle 2 cylinders. So, after scraping, cleaning and honing, it now turns all the way over.
I am a little worried about cracks in the top of the engine block. Cracks start at the number 1 cylinder sleeve and run to the water holes by no.2, then to the sleeve in no.2, then to the water holes in no.3, then to the sleeve in no. 3, even weakening the wall a little at the sleeve. Do I need a new block? ( Shudder ). Are they even available?
Tomorrow ( after work, of course, heh heh ) I plan to talk with my local machinist about the cracks and see how much he'll grind the valves for, as long as the head is of.
The weird hitch ball turned out to be an actual ball hitch that somebody had inserted in place of a large bolt. Must've been all they had handy.
The loader does have, I discovered, a sticker saying International 1000. The other implements are for sure not factory. The scraper says " Ditch Maker". Must have been for making roads with ditches alongside? The sickle bar is from some German-sounding company. That bar looks like death eatin' onions. I wonder how many men those things have dis-whatevered.
