Hi. Of course it is always best to use a new gasket, but I have had to use the old one several times over the years. the metal gaskets if gently cleaned up and then spray painted with at least 3 coats of aluminum spray paint from a can will seal up normally without a problem. In the 50s this was the factory method of puting head gaskets on flat head chrysler engines and this method has been used to an advantage by me for 47 years of repairing farm equipment.
