When I want to install a temp gauge on an old engine with no provision for a sensor this is what I do. Obtain a temp gauge with the smallest bulb and capillary tubing that you can find. Remove the top radiator hose at the engine and slide the bulb and tubing into the removed hose a couple of inches and tie wrap the capillary tubing to the neck where the hose mounts. Dab a small amount of silicon sealant to the neck and capillary tube. Slide the radiator hose back in place. Install two radiator hose clamps and stagger the joints. Works fine and will not leak.
