Maybe this is a bad idea, but it worked for me. I read in the archives that a good gen will spin like a motor if it is hooked up to voltage. Mine looked good inside, but produced no voltage. So I took the belt off, and tested it with a 12 volt battery (6 volt gen--kinda risky). Sure enough, it spun, and I guess that polarized it too, because now it puts out 8.4 volts at idle speed. There's more in the archives on polarizing the right way. Or maybe I was just lucky. You might want to try this just before you take it off the tractor that last time before heading to the rebuild shop. I used jumper cables and put pos. to the 'F' post and neg to the 'A' post when doing this "motor test" (all the other wires were disconnected). It should spin in the same direction when "motoring" as it does when being driven with the belt. I only ran the 12 volts through it for maybe a second. I was afraid to try it for longer. Maybe I should have tried just a simple polarization before resorting to this rather drastic treatment. You probably will. BTW, this in a 41 A with cutout, and had been disconnected for 20+ years. Also, I think I have a ground in my field now, because it still produces voltage even with the field wire disconnected. I am not sure if this was something I burned in there with my homemade electric test of dubious quality, or a condition that was pre-existing, or just the way it's supposed to work. Anyone know?

You got to understand that while my Mom is a hard worker who will always help whenever she can... she had never operated farm machinery before that day. Dad got her out there, explained how the clutch was the same as in our o
